2. An important compositional factor is where you place the subject matter within the negative space.

3. There’s really no limit to how large the negative space can be in proportion to the subject matter, so have fun exploring this idea and see how much negative space you can find.

The negative space around the subject becomes the subject matter of the image itself.

POURED PUDDLE

Distort reality and intrigue the viewer with this simple trick of the eye.

Puddle reflections create a slightly distorted version of reality, almost like a view into a parallel dimension. Even in the height of a dry, hot summer you can still make interesting reflection pictures using puddles – just bring your own water and create your own! Find something interesting that you would like to see reflected in a puddle, pour water on the ground and off you go. Between 500 ml and 1 litre (roughly 1 and 2 pints) works best, depending on how quickly the water runs off the surface or soaks into the ground.

These images are easier to capture on a smartphone than any other type of camera because you can get the lens so close to the water. The small size of the camera’s lens and its sensor in proportion to the puddle makes the subject seem even more imposing.
